What is good governance?
At CWMAC, we define effective governance as the transparent, accountable, and inclusive management of resources and decision-making processes to achieve sustainable conservation and community benefits.
It fosters inclusivity by engaging communities and other stakeholders’ voices are heard and well represented in leadership and planning. It is the one that prioritizes sustainability through proper balance of social, economic, and ecological goals, that enable WMAs to achieve their objectives while benefiting the communities they serve.
Why is this important to the work we do?

By strengthening governance, we create a stable and sustainable environment where communities can actively participate in conservation efforts, investors can trust in responsible management, and WMAs can thrive as models of biodiversity protection and economic opportunity.
By 2028, we target to have strengthened the WMA governance structures by 80%, improved management and operational systems within 70% of WMAs, the leadership capacity of at least 20 WMAs and the technical capacity of at least 25 WMAs. |
